Year Five

Welcome to our Year 5 class page! My name is now Mrs Sharples and I will be teaching your child in Year 5 this year. I am absolutely thrilled to finally be teaching this wonderful group of children and I feel lucky to be spending this year with them.

After such a successful time in Year 4, with Mr Stevens and Miss Sweeney, I am sure this year will be just as fantastic and filled with even more Mayfield Magic Moments! The teaching assistant supporting our class this year is Miss Wild and Mr Choudhury will be teaching Year 5 every Friday – they are both equally as excited to be working with your children! I am sure this is just the beginning of what will be a wonderful year; working together to achieve the very best for all children.

As always, I aim to make all learning as exciting as possible by covering a wide range of topics and ensuring all children find lessons accessible and enjoyable. The purpose of this newsletter is to provide you with a brief overview of the work I have planned for the children this term, without giving away too many surprises! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at school via the office or catch me at the Year 5 door at home time.

Each half term the children in Year 5 explore different ‘big questions’ that underpin their learning for the upcoming weeks. This ranges from Geography questions such as ‘What countries can I see from space?’ to History questions such as ‘How did the Vikings take control of Britain?’.

English covers a wide variety of fantastic texts for the children to read, enjoy, analyse and respond to through their writing. Children will be taught the skills to write persuasive newspaper articles, in-depth character descriptions, mysterious short stories and first person diary entries. Year 5 Maths will build upon key skills and previous years knowledge, whilst preparing the children for their transition to Year 6 and sitting their SATs. We will explore place value and the four operations, before focusing on other areas, such as fractions, decimals and percentages.

Thank you for taking the time to visit our page!

Mrs Sharples 😊
