Year One

Welcome to Year One,

Your class teachers are Miss Sidlow (1PS) and Mrs Collier (1SC), and we are delighted to be able to teach your wonderful children at this amazing school. We have a fantastic team which includes our Year 1 Teaching Assistants, Mrs Schofield and Miss Hussain.

Year 1 is an exciting year for the children. They initially continue to learn through play, before being gradually exposed to more formal learning as a whole class and in small groups. The children will build on their work from the Early Years Foundation Stage and begin to become more independent learners.

Whilst still having lots of fun and engaging in practical learning, the children will be encouraged to develop mastery of number, as well as apply their phonic knowledge and skills. The children will also develop their understanding of grammar, specific terminologies, and sentence composition.

Alongside this, we focus on six amazing topics across the year, one for each half-term. These include: ‘Where do we live?’, ‘Would you rather go on holiday to Kenya or the North Pole?’, ‘How have toys changed?’, ‘What’s it like beside the seaside’, ‘Who was Queen Elizabeth II?’ and ‘How has flight changed?’. Throughout these topics, children will be immersed in cultural experiences through the curriculum and be involved in a wide range of activities and trips.

We can’t wait to continue to build on and create children’s love of learning! Please check this page and our Twitter account regularly for photographs and updates.
