Year 4 Newsletter

Dear Parents / Carers,

Welcome back to another year at Mayfield!

I would like to begin by saying what a wonderful start the children have made in Year 4, and I hope this continues into the new school year. As you may already know, my name is Mr Carr and I will be teaching your child in Year 4. I hope together we can ensure the children have a happy and productive year, striving to achieve their best.

The following information outlines the topics that your child will be studying during this half-term, as well as information about what your child will need to bring to school each day.

In Literacy we will be looking at a range of interesting and exciting literature. To start we will be exploring stories historical settings, with a focus on literature that relates to our history topic for this term, Ancient Greece. Based upon this the children will write their own stories set in Ancient Greece.

In Numeracy this term we are going to be working with 5 digit numbers and looking at the relationship between thousand, hundreds, tens and units. Also Mrs Timperley is to be doing some exciting work with the children on shape, building on their understanding of 2D and 3D shapes.

Our first Science topic this term will be ‘Habitats', in which we will be exploring how they provide the conditions for life. Also we will examine how different plants and animals are suited to their unique habitats.

As I have already mentioned, our History topic for this term will be Ancient Greece. As part of this topic we will be learning about this magnificent time in history, explore the culture and life of people in this period of time.

This term the children will be receiving specialist coaching for P.E. and are also lucky enough to be taking part in contemporary dance workshops. Due to these extra workshops, the children will have three P.E. lessons a week and therefore will need to make sure they have their kits on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday .

Music lesson will continue to be taught by our specials music teacher Mrs Fox , who I am sure has some fantastic things lined up for us this year.

In Art we will be looking at different chair designs and how fashions have changed over the years. Then we will be designing our own fantasy chairs for a very special person.

On Thursdays the children will be taught by Mrs Timperley , who as well as teach both Numeracy and Literacy, will also be teaching R.E. and P.S.H.C.E.

The Big Read will take place on a Tuesday so it is important that the children make sure they bring in their reading books on this day. Reading homework should be brought back in to school as soon as possible.

Homework will be given out on Friday for the children to work on over the weekend; this will then be collected on the Monday . Each child will receive a Homework folder to keep work in.

The children have each been given a Spelling diary to record their spellings in each week. New spellings will be given out every Wednesday and the children will be tested on these spellings the following Wednesday therefore it is important spelling diaries are brought in every Wednesday .

Please feel free to come and see me at any time to discuss any queries you have or concerns regarding your child.

Yours faithfully,

Mr N Carr
